Description
On-screen: Dr. Clitterhouse talks with Jo
Description: A gentler, pseudo-love theme as Dr. Clitterhouse talks with Jo Keller (there is not a strong love angle in the film); there is a minor twist at the end as they part (marked Triste)
Music annotations: [m. 13] legato; [m. 16] rall; [m. 17] ten / rall; [m. 18] a tempo; [m. 21] pp / rall; [m. 23] a tempo; [m. 26] pp / triste; [m. 28] morendo
Film annotations: [m. 13] That I mean something to you; [m. 16] You must understand; [m. 18] For its own sake; [m. 19] It was something like; [m. 21] And I can't risk; [m. 23] Will I hear from you soon; [m. 24] Well, goodbye Professor; [m. 27] What are you doing Rocks?; [m. 28] Some research of my own / End of Part 2
Orchestration annotations: [m. 13] str + harp; [m. 21] 6 viol div / celeste / harp; [m. 23] cello / solo viol; [m. 25] E. horn, 2 fl; [m. 26] solo viol, cello, vibra
Analysis: Jo's theme is characterized by a four-note gesture that begins with an aspiring leap and uses dotted rhythms; there is a clear tonal center on Ab but the music is richly chromatic; the second chord (A13) is a colorful "Heartstring chord"; in measure 20 the music takes a brief detour to the key of Cb major (bIII); after returning to Ab major, the cue ends unexpectedly in ab minor (with a prominent added sixth)
