Key: bb - b

Description
On-screen: Newspaper presses rolling
Description: Mechanical music as we watch newspapers being pressed; the syncopated trumpet gesture from the opening titles (Cauldron 1) is then added as a layer above it; additional music is cut here
Music annotations: [m. 1] (molto marcato) / ff / tr; [m. 3] sffz
Film annotations: [m. 1] Temp track / The printing press; [m. 3] Dr. on trial
Orchestration annotations: [m. 1] 2 clar + 2nd piano / 2 horns and violas (pizz) also marimba / (triangel) pianos right hand / horn muted / 2 trbs (hats), 2 harps pizz / b cl / piano left hand / one pizz basses, celli, bassoons, timp with s.d. stick; [m. 3] brass, 3 trpt + W.W. (that's left) soli / 3 trbs / T.C.
Analysis: This cue simulates a machine with repeating layers of busy motives (there are four concurrent motives "spinning" in the cue); overall they communicate bb minor, shifting between iadd9 and a common-tone diminished 7th chord; over this mechanical layer, the Cauldron theme returns (from the opening title sequence) when we read about the Doctor on trial; in the middle of the cue the machine modulates up a half-step to b minor
