| Description: |
a large congregation sings "Who Were You At Home" together; it begins with the stuttering pianist, who plays a chord and arpeggiates a tonic triad, imitated by the congregation; then they all begin to sing along with the tune; the camera moves through various closeups and we hear individual singers - first Yancey with his strong voice, then a man playing a violin and singing in a different key, then the pianist, then a number of the women in the audience (Mrs. Cravat and Dixie Lee), then a young boy, then Tracy Wyatt (singing comically in a whooping style) and so on; the cue sheet states that this tune was composed by Max Steiner - the words are printed in Edna Ferber's novel, but this doesn't appear to be linked with an actual song, so perhaps they did ask Steiner to set the words to music before the filming began. |
