The chromatic tear gas gesture is played in parallel tritones and parallel quartal chords; this is harmonized by rising parallel dominant 7ths over a dissonant pedal (creating a tense [01258] sonority); another dissonant layer is added in m. 33 when Rocky shoots his gun (creating an 8-note [01245689] sonority at this point); each of the layers continues to modulate higher and higher (sometimes in coordination with each other and sometimes not), creating growing tension in the scene; the cue ends with an uneasy diminished 7th chord |
