Description
On-screen: Henriette's landlady talks to the Duke
Description: Here Steiner combines a distorted version of Henriette's theme with a minor version of the Spring Time theme as we watch the landlady talking with the Duke in another room about Henriette; the cue ends with a prolonged harmony that generates tension as Henriette waits to see how the Duke will respond to the news that she can't pay her rent; most of the music cuts out when the door closes
Music annotations: [m. 87] meno / dim; [m. 89] mysterioso; [m. 90] d; [m. 91] sfz / arco; [m. 92] rit; [m. 98] sfz-p / sffz / continued in reel 12
Film annotations: [m. 83] The strawberries were all gone; [m. 87] Listen! Mlle!; [m. 91] Duke enters; [m. 93] But papa, we only; [m. 95] May we come and see you; [m. 98] He closes door
Orchestration annotations: [m. 83] 3 fl + cel / 2 basses; [m. 87] celli pizz; [m. 89] horn; [m. 91] 2 horns muted / gong; [m. 97] 1 horn / timp
Analysis: The Spring Time theme moves in parallel triads; the cue ends with a prolonged viio7 over a tonic pedal
