People celebrate in the pub |
| Description: |
The folk song is played quickly and with constant rising modulations, creating a great deal of excitement as Gypo creates a raucous celebration with his money; layered on top of the Irish Washerwoman are the Blood Money motif (m. 30) and the Rebel theme ("Wearin' 'o the Green" in m. 36) as we see a rebel spying on Gypo through the pub window; near the end of the cue, the Informer theme is also layered on top (m. 45); note that measures 41-44 of the sketch are played twice in the film and the final sonority is held out longer than the sketch indicates |

| Analysis: |
The melody continually rises in the first section arpeggiating A - b (in A major) - C - D (in C major) - Eb - f - g - Ab (in Eb major) - Bb (in g minor); the key changes follow an ascending thirds pattern, with a dominant pedal in the bass in each key; a descending chromatic countermelody is added to the tune in m. 8; the second section begins in m. 26, soon after a rebel is seen spying through the window; this begins with a passage using whole-tone harmonies over an ascending chromatic bass; next we hear the blood money motif, which is dissonant against the Eb tonality of the tune; a sense of polytonality emerges in m. 36, where the rebel theme in C major is layered on top of F# and G# half diminished chords in the accompaniment; in the third section, a solid tonal center is reached in A major, followed by an entry of the Informer theme using an octatonic collection |
